Release the Kraken!

Release the Kraken!

K

I love to swim.  I could spend all day in the water, as long as I can see what’s in it with me.  Usually, I would prefer a pool because sea creatures kind of freak me out.  (My husband is reading this and rolling his eyes because he would argue that even little fishes freak me out, and he wouldn’t be wrong.)

Our family recently moved to Florida, and while it has always been a dream of mine to live near the water, I’ve just discovered that in the sound near our house, where the water is pretty low and I’ve been imagining taking my daughter to play when it gets a bit warmer, it’s pretty common for sting rays to hide.  I’m talking water that at most points only comes to a little over my ankles, but these suckers like to hide under the sand.  I was told that if we wanted to get in the water, to wear water shoes and to kick up the sand a bit where ever we were at, to make sure there were no sleeping sting rays nearby.

But seriously, how can you not be just a little creeped out by some of the creatures of the deep?  I was going through some of this with my daughter in our homeschool science class and the pictures of some of these animals in the sea are enough to keep me away from water for awhile.

Do you remember a movie, Clash of the Titans?  Not the new one, but the original movie, where at the end the princess is supposed to be sacrificed to the Kraken for her mother offending the goddess?  Do you remember the crazy and scary (well, scary for 80s graphics back then) Kraken that rose from the ocean with all it’s arms?  I’m sure that something like that might be waiting for me out in our sound. (I’m kidding, well, maybe…)

Stories that have some creature that rises up from a dark place that no one can see, very creepy to me.  Thus, my preference for swimming in a pool, where I can see in the water around me and worry that the worst thing I’ll encounter are the chemicals. *smiles*  I’ll leave you with a bit of poetry from Lord Tennyson.  Have you had a scary encounter with a sea creature?

  1. I love swimming, too. 🙂 That is so awesome that you may have sting rays in your backyard. Yes, I am impressed and just a tad jealous. I want sting rays, too. Krakken, not so much. If you have one of those, you can keep it. 🙂

  2. I’ve swam with sting rays and Dolphins(twice). They’re really nice ? I’d do it again in a heart beat.

It is a little nerve wracking to be snorkeling and a sting ray with a four foot wing span comes up underneath you and pushes you out of the way for food. Lol!!

    1. The best ever for me was swimming with sea turtles. They were amazing and would do that again in a heartbeat, but still leery of things like sea eels. 🙂

    1. A friend of mine posted on Facebook the other day about a lizard/gecko thing that was as big as a human, found swimming in the ocean. No thanks! 🙂

  3. Loved that movie until it was played about a jillion times ? I guess I’m a pool girl too, but I do like to wade in the ocean, especially when I can see the bottom.
